Our Story
At NSL Saw & Tool, we’ve built our reputation on over 45 years of quality service, precision craftsmanship, and trusted relationships. Founded in 1978 by Duane Larson, the business started in a basement, sharpening chainsaw blades for the local community.
What began as a small sharpening operation quickly gained recognition for outstanding service. As demand for knife sharpening, saw blade sharpening, and tool repair grew, NSL Saw & Tool moved to its current Bountiful, Utah location in 1991.
A Legacy of Precision & Craftsmanship
Duane passed down the skills of a master knife sharpener to his grandson, Jeff Muir, mentoring him for over 15 years. In 2012, Jeff and his mother, Heather Muir, took over the business, making us a proud third-generation, family-owned company serving Davis, Salt Lake, and Weber counties—and now sharpening tools across Utah and surrounding states.

Jeff Muir
Owner & Master Sharpener
Jeff was practically raised in the shop—standing at his grandfather’s side since the age of five. With decades of hands-on experience, he’s a perfectionist when it comes to sharpening. Whether it’s a chef’s knife, a carbide saw blade, or a grooming clipper, Jeff ensures every sharpening job meets the highest standards.
Known across Utah for his expertise as a knife sharpener, Jeff has helped customers save thousands by restoring, not replacing, their tools. Outside the shop, he’s a passionate outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, building custom rifles, and off-roading with his partner and their two boys—who are now growing up in the shop just like he did.
Marcus Muir
Master Sharpener & Operations Manager
Marcus Muir played a vital role in NSL Saw & Tool for over 20 years, continuing the family legacy started by his father-in-law, Duane Larson. As the second-generation owner alongside his wife, Heather, Marcus dedicated himself to perfecting the craft of sharpening and ensuring the business thrived. Under his leadership, he helped expand NSL Saw & Tool’s reputation for quality and precision before passing the torch to his son, Jeff.
Though Marcus has since retired, his impact on the business remains. You may still see him around the shop from time to time, lending a helping hand or simply spending time with Jeff.
Outside of NSL Saw & Tool, Marcus enjoys shooting, the outdoors, and, most of all, time with his family. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he takes pride in the legacy he helped build and the knowledge he has passed down to the next generation.
Heather Muir
Co-Owner & Administrative Support
As a co-owner of NSL Saw & Tool, Heather Muir plays a vital role in supporting the business and the family legacy. The daughter of Duane Larson, Heather has been part of the business since its early days. While she doesn’t handle the day-to-day operations, Heather has lent her skills in administrative work and continues to provide invaluable support to her husband, Marcus, and her son, Jeff.
Family is everything to Heather, and she’s deeply dedicated to ensuring the legacy of NSL Saw & Tool thrives for future generations. She shares Marcus’s love for the outdoors and spending quality time with their children and granddaughter. Heather’s passion for her family and the business reflects the strong foundation on which the shop is built, and her unwavering support helps the company continue to grow and succeed.
Duane Larson
Founder & Legacy Creator
In 1978, Duane Larson began sharpening tools from his home, working long hours after his day job to create a better future for his family. What started as a side hustle quickly grew into something more. Through relentless determination and a deep commitment to craftsmanship, Duane built NSL Saw & Tool from the ground up. In 1991, he moved the business to its current location in Bountiful, Utah, where he invested in professional-grade machines and transformed the shop into a trusted community resource.
Duane’s story is one of grit, family, and faith in hard work. With the loving support of his wife, Bev—his partner of over 50 years—Duane turned a dream into a legacy. That legacy continues to impact thousands of customers and three generations of family.
More than just a sharpener, Duane mentored his grandson Jeff, sharing his knowledge of tools, hunting, and life. These lessons shaped Jeff’s path and remain at the core of the shop’s values today. Though retired, Duane still pops in regularly—offering advice, sharpening tools, or giving Jeff a hard time (because that’s just what grandpas do).
Outside of the shop, Duane finds joy in woodworking projects and cherishing moments with Bev and their close-knit family. His legacy is not just the business he built, but the example he set—a craftsman, a teacher, and a family man who turned a small sharpening service into a multi-generational institution.
